Investigators from the New Canaan Police Department received a report shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Friday, March 29, from a passerby who reported that a vehicle had just struck a guardrail on New Norwalk Road and failed to stop. The caller was able to provide police with the vehicle’s license plate, prompting an investigation.
According to police, officers traveled to a North Wilton Road home, where the vehicle was registered to, and they made contact with Gail Ahern, 77, who was the operator of the vehicle that struck the guardrail.
Police said that while speaking with Ahern, they determined that she was allegedly impaired. She proceeded to fail multiple Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and was subsequently arrested.
Ahern was taken into custody and transported to New Canaan Police Headquarters, where she refused to submit to a breathalyzer test. Ahern was arrested and charged with illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and evading responsibility after being involved in a crash leaving property damage. Ahern was released on a $500 bond and scheduled to appear in court on Friday, April 12 to answer the charges.
